Monday: Work on Figures of Speech Booklets:
Each page should have:
1) The definition of the word,
2) An example,
3) An example from a published text, and
4) (optional) a picture
Figures of Speech Definitions with examples in parentheses:
Alliteration: repeated beginning of word sound (We wildly worked pulling weeds.)
Cliche: an over-used figure of speech (fit as a fiddle, dime a dozen)
Hyperbole: a wild exaggeration meant (I could eat a horse! That's a million miles away!)
Idiom: an expression that is not to be taken literally (Don't be a stick in the mud.)
Metaphor: comparison of two things without using the words like or as (Her heart was stone.)
Onomatopoeia: sound effect words (pop, sizzle, smack)
Personification: giving human traits to non-human things or objects (The sunlight danced on the water.)
Pun: a play on words (Make like a banana and split.)
Simile: comparison of two things using the words like or as (She was as sweet as sugar.)
Tuesday: Realistic Fiction Book Project Presentations:
Realistic fiction book projects were due today. Students presented them to the class.
Wednesday: Finish Figurative Language Booklets

Went through a PowerPoint to explain the four sentence structures: Simple, Compound, Complex, and Compound Complex.
